Hazel Kemp
has been involved in greyhound racing for over 30 years but
it was not until the year 2000 that she and her family
decided to expand and moved to their current location at
Bodell Kennels in Emneth, near Wisbech.

The
kennels were bought because of the extra space available (7
acres to be precise) and Hazel now spends a lot of her time,
breeding, whelping and rearing pups at the kennels. There is
space for 60 dogs and an additional 12 large breeding
paddocks. There is naturally a consistent turnaround in the
dogs at the kennels with pups coming in and those who have
finished schooling leaving for pastures new.
The
kennels are very much a family run affair with Hazel and her
husband working in partnership with their three children,
Robert, Shaun and Michelle who all help out on a regular
basis.
Hazel
sends out runners on a regular basis to both Mildenhall and
Yarmouth. Mildenhall suits the sprinters in the kennels
whilst the more staying types tend to run at Yarmouth.
Mildenhall is only half an hour away from the kennels whilst
Yarmouth is about 1 ½ hours by car. Hazel is more than happy
to take dogs around the Open circuit if they prove to be
good enough. Distance is no object.
The kennel
regularly send out winners at both venues and Hazel has had
notable successes throughout her career which saw the likes
of Fly Tess win over 30 Opens. Many people will have seen
greyhounds with the ‘Bodell’ prefix regularly in the winners
enclosure. Bodell Bluebell (25 Open wins), Bodell Sonic
(who won several Opens), and Bodell Honcho, who raced over
100 times and won the Fengate Collar in 2003. Other notable
winners include Another Crook (6 Opens on bounce at
Romford), and Soviet Merc (T/R Nottingham. Finalist Irish St
Ledger)
Hazel is
happy to whelp down bitches for owners and the option is
also there to rear and school the pups and she has had
plenty of success in this sphere in recent years. Shimano
Surprise was reared at the kennels and went on to win the
Ladbrokes World Cup Festival Bitches Final and won 10
top-class Opens. Bodell Sonic & Ultra Sonic were also
whelped on site who both made great progress in the English
Produce stakes in 2004(Final & ¼ final). Most lately Bodell
Sapphire/Savings/Zig Zag have all been brought through to
top grade and Open running.
The
kennels have excellent facilities with a peat gallop (280m)
available for use all year round and several large grass
paddocks to give the pups plenty of freedom. There is a
walking machine and also all the latest equipment to hand
for treating any injuries and a physio visits the kennels
every week.
Dogs can
be sourced for owners to suit requirements and pocket!
Kennel Prices are on a sliding scale for puppies and set
fees for racers of £4.50 a day.
