About Mick Puzey

Mick Puzey was a regular on the flapping circuit in 1959 and took out his license in 1969 when he started training at Bletchley. He was there for four years before moving to Portsmouth in 1973. Mick married his wife Sue in 1981, the same year that he moved to Haringey, where he trained until 1985.

He was offered the lucrative Walthamstow contract in 1985 where he stayed until its closure in August 2008 and moved to his current track Harlow. He now has a kennel strength of 80 dogs. At Claverhambury since 1994, Mick has trained some of the top greyhounds in the UK. Before Fire Height Dan there was Im Frankie who was born and bred at the kennels. He won the Milton Keynes Derby, The Scurry Gold Cup and the East Anglian Challenge Trophy twice! Im Frankie won 50 Opens and was duly crowned the Best British Bred Greyhound. In 2007 he claimed another Arc Final when Too Risky won a quality renewal by a short-head and a month later the kennel took the NGRC Stewards Cup with Mitzie.

Rosies Opinion was reared at the kennels and she won the Grenwich Cup and The Test (run at Walthamstow). She reached the Final of the Oaks but was withdrawn off-colour. She was tragically injured in a heat of the Gold Collar and the kennel believe she could have been one of the best bitches of all time.

Fire Height Dan - BGRB Greyhound Of The Year 2004

After finishing 2004 on a high with 3 invitation race wins, Dan's year had been far from plain sailing. He started his racing career in Ireland in an unraced stake at Youghal. His Open race career in England began with 5 Puppy Open race wins at Walthamstow, breaking 29 seconds each time!

He then went on to win the Peterborough Puppy Derby after turning 2 years-old. He then reached the William Hill Derby Final, winning three rounds along the way. Due to injury he was rested for 6 weeks, but he was soon back to winning ways when taking the Oxford Gold Cup.  All roads then led to Yarmouth for the 58th East Anglian Derby. After finishing 2nd in all three rounds he saved his best until last - winning the £12,000 cheque in 28.06.

Dan's record in 2004......

26 races, wins 17, 2nd 7, 3rd 1, 6th 1

Fire Height Dan added another Grade One Competition win in 2005 when he won the Ladbrokes.com Arc in mightily impressive fashion. He had to withdraw from the 2005 Derby after winning his opening Heat when injuring a wrist.

Micky Puzey and connections decided to retire Dan after this injury and he is now standing at stud with Pam Heasman.
