Kelly Mullins was born into
greyhound racing with a father who was Champion Trainer, and a
mother who was Champion
Trainer no fewer than 5 times. The youngest of three brothers,
Kelly spent all his life at the famous Oldhall Kennels before
going it alone in 2002. He initially had two businesses, running
a boarding kennels alongside as well as training a few
greyhounds to run at Reading.
Starting with just five or six
dogs, Kelly sent out his first winner in the shape of Airmount
Liz before he slowly expanded his training set up, built a new
kennel block. He had already sent out Premier Time to win his
first Open before he joined the training ranks at Oxford.
Brindle Tiger was his first runner at the track and won before
Kelly was offered a job to train at Hove little over a year
later.
In September of 2006 he achieved
his long-held ambition, which was to gain an attachment at
Walthamstow where the family had previously enjoyed so much
success. There kennels are run very much as a partnership with
Kelly concentrating on the training side whilst his future wife
Layla Field, who used to work for Graham Sharp, is responsible
for the breeding, rearing and schooling of the pups.
The training establishment is
steeped with history and is quite rightly known as the
'Championship Kennels' after the exploits of the Linda Mullins
and previous occupants such as Geoff De Mulder. Becoming
Champion Trainer is Kelly's ultimate ambition and work is
currently taking place in building up his kennel strength and
breeding the next batch of superstars. The facilities are set in
10 acres of land with 8 grass paddocks (all over 100 yards
long), a 200 yard grass gallop and three kennel blocks. You can
find out more about the breeding, rearing and schooling
operation at the kennels by clicking on the link below.
Kelly is always happy to offer
advice to any newcomers to the sport and assist them in
purchasing their first greyhound. While he does ultimately want
to improve his kennel strength in quality as well as quantity,
he will be able to help you buy a greyhound to suit your
requirements whether you be looking for a grader or a top-class
Open racer.
