Set in the heart
of the Buckinghamshire countryside, Rosewood Kennels can be
found near the town of Langley, adjacent to Iver Golf Course.
There is kennelling for up to 50 greyhounds and facilities
include an all-weather gallop, physio, ultra-sound and laser
equipment. The kennels are surrounded by good country walks and
are close to Langley National Trust Park.
Gary became
England's youngest ever trainer when aged just 20. He had
previously spent 5 years working with experienced trainers
including his Uncle, Mr W.P. Matthews and Mr William Riley at
Romford. He took out his first license at Southend and whilst
there he worked with Joe Cobbold who owned and bred the great
Decoy dogs.
After Southend Gary moved onto
Essex where he trained the well-bred dogs for Burt McCarthy for
4 years. He started out on the Open race scene when he moved to
kennels in Tunbridge Wells but in 1986, with the need for more
space, he moved to his present kennels nearly Langley. Just a
year after moving to Langley Gary was offered a lucrative
contract to train at top track Walthamstow.
Gary won his first Classic in 1979
(1000 Guineas) at Hendon and went on to train Signal Spark to
win the Derby in 1987 and also won the Consolation Final the
same night with Karen's Champ. The latter was a prolific Open
race winner and reached both the Scottish and Yarmouth Derby
Finals. Gary has also won 4 Puppy Derbies, The St Leger (Exile
Energy), The Puppy Oaks, The Laurels (Echo Spark), The Springbok
and the Irish Grand National. He has also sent out the winners
of several other top class Opens from his base in
Buckinghamshire.
Gary trained Keeper's Tom, who
reached the Semi-Finals of The Derby and he met the legendary
Ballregan Bob three times where he went down twice, beaten a
short-head and beating him at Wimbledon. Lodge Prince was
another great dog in Gary's care, a greyhound who held several
track records, he recorded a sensational 28.37 seconds over
Wimbledon's 480m.
Other starts include Smoking Barrel
(owned by Vinnie Jones) who won the Pepsi-Cola Marathon at
Walthamstow, Champagne Glory held the 575m track record
at Romford for 8 years and Simon Simon, winner of the Springbok
and Irish Grand National. Gary also won the Stewards Cup
in 2005 for the second year running.
A recent partnership with Dipping
