Phil Broome has been
involved in greyhound racing since childhood. He would
always accompany his parents to Hall Green and also joined
his father in working part-time for Ray Wilkes and Cradley
Heath. Now attached to Peterborough, Phil learnt his trade
on the flaps in the 1980's and took out his permit license
in 1989. He was attached to no fewer than four tracks;
Milton Keynes, Norton Canes, Mildenhall and Henlow.
He then took out an
Owner/Trainer license with his best dog being Lightly Arrow
who ran in the Permit Derby at Hackney and the Permit St
Leger at Rye House. During this time Phil spent an awful lot
of time on the road sending out several Open winners before
running mostly at Milton Keynes. In March 2004 his move to
March Road in Whittlesey coincided with the start of his
attachment to Peterborough.
Lady Darkness (pictured to
the right with her jacket) won 10 from her last 18 races at
Peterborough and she will be used as a brood in the future.
As will Lottie Lightning who is a full sister to Caloona
Striker and reached the Finals of the Carlsberg Marathon at
Henlow and the New Year's Marathon Cup at Coventry.
Phil has excellent contacts
in Ireland and he will cross the Irish Sea 3 to 4 times a
year to buy new stock. He has also attended veterinary
seminars in Ireland and has a great knowledge of treating
greyhounds and diagnosing injuries. He has a fully equipped
treatment room and also uses George Drake (Physio) and John
O'Connor (Vet). There are 11 sawdust paddocks and the
kennels have access to excellent grass and all-weather
gallops and use a state of the art portable drag hare. There
is currently room for 20 dogs with a planned kennel
extension meaning there will soon be space for 30
greyhounds. Phil will travel anywhere (even Ireland!) if his
dogs are good enough.
Due to the fact that there
are several schooling tracks in close proximity Phil is more
than happy to take in greyhounds and school them.
Phil already has some very
good owners and syndicates in his kennel and is more than
happy to help prospective owners and give advice on
greyhound ownership and how to set up a syndicate. His
current owners receive newsletters at least every three
months keeping them up-to-date with all the latest updates
from the kennel.
