William Hill Derby, 01st
Round. Heat 1. Yorkshire got favourite
backers off to a good start, getting up late to deny Feora Field
with Mark Wallis's
Armies Plan qualifying in third. Heat 2. Mark Wallis soon
trebled his qualifiers as both January Tiger, winner by 1 3/4
lengths in 28.74 and Ronnies Champion (second in 28.88) gave the
kennel a 1-2 and
Seamus Cahill made it a 1-2-3 for Walthamstow as Get On
Blackie claimed 3rd, 4 lengths adrift. Kays Quest is also
through after taking fourth. January Tiger was quickest of the
night. Heat 3. The shock of the opening Heats saw the
previously undefeated Ballymac Charley eliminated. Normally an
excellent trapper,
Carly
Philpott's
inmate started slowly, and was badly crowded during the run to
the first which put paid to his chances. Heat 4.Gary Baggs's Senahel
Gift caused an upset at 10/1 when denying
Mark Wallis's
hot-favourite Go Commando by 3/4 of a length in 29.03.
Jason Foster said he
would love to have a runner go beyond the first round for the
first time and duly saw his Corbally Hero do just that when
taking 3rd. Heat 5. Rhincrew Seagal, a former Finalist
got his campaign off to a fine start with a 7 1/2 defeat of In
The Woods in a fast 28.89. Heat 6. Monkspath Willie
recorded one of the fastest times of the night when showing
blistering early pace to beat Velvet Rebel 1 3/4 lengths in
28.76. Heat 7.Paul
Young
said his Fear Nein Ein would be finishing strongly in his races
and so it proved, the son of Top Honcho getting up on the line
for a short-head defeat of Kingsmill Again. Heat 8.
Blissful Classic suffered crowding at the first but still scored
in a quick 28.84 by 6 3/4 lengths from Erinaceous Star. Lenson
Bertie took third. Heat 9. 4 qualify from this Heat.
Ballymac Rooster gained some compensation for the
Carly Philpott
kennel when taking 2nd place behind Zigzag Dutchman and is
through to round 2. Our Ocean was a first runner in the Derby
for Paul Sallis and he
also qualifies in 4th.
