"Chris is a
fine trainer, one of the best feeders of a dog I have ever seen
in 50 years of greyhound racing. He has it all."
Geoffrey De-Mulder.
Chris Allsopp
only took out his license in October of 2003 and is without
doubt, the new kid on the block. After
only 6 weeks in training he sent out Miss Longford to contest
the Coventry Summer Derby and she was beaten
only a length by
the Charlie Lister trained Cocks Hero.
Since the age of 4 Chris has always
been around greyhounds. His father was a trainer at Norton Canes
and Perry Barr. At the age of 14 Chris started working part-time
for Bertie Gaynor who was attached to Hall Green. When he left
school he joined Bertie full-time until the age of eighteen when
Bertie retired and returned to Ireland.
After a spell
with Bruce Jennings at Nottingham Chris was asked to work for
Paddy Hancox who had a very large Open race kennel. There he
helped Paddy win the Grand National with Kildare Slippy.
After a short
spell away from the game where Chris played semi-professional
Rugby Union he was persuaded
by many of his Coventry friends and locals to get back into
greyhound racing. After initially taking out his license with
just 4 dogs as a hobby, just a year and a half later he had a
full kennel with in excess of 60 greyhounds - 40 on the racing
strength and a selection of high class Open dogs. There is a
waiting list for new greyhounds and prospective owners.
Chris
is now a regular on the Open scene and figures prominently in
the Trainers Championship Table. He was already well established as the
top trainer at Coventry prior to being offered the lucrative
contract to train at current track Monmore in October 2005.
Rosshill View gave him his biggest win to-date when landing the
£5,000 Midland Flat. He also sent out She Said No to reach the
William Hill Northern Puppy Derby in 2006. Mango Tango took the
£3,000 Maiden Derby Final at Sheffield in 2007. Rev Counter gave
Allsopp his biggest win to date when landing the Betfred Eclipse
later the same year. Chris is a young trainer with
a young kennel and young staff who are eager to win and will
travel everywhere with the right dog.
Having started
from scratch, his West View Farm establishment consisted of just
two empty units, Chris has invested heavily in two new kennel
blocks and paddocks. He has use of a
swimming pool and gallops within the complex and with 7 concrete
paddocks and a 3 acre field, the greyhounds in his care have
excellent facilities in which to prosper.
