Steve Gammon has
been involved with greyhounds for as long as he can remember.
Having worked for his father at Ramsgate for 8 years from 1982
as a kennel hand, he took over the license to train in his own
right in 1990. Steve was at Ramsgate until 1996 when he moved to
his current training complex in Keston and had runners at
Catford Stadium. After Catford's closure in 2003 he was offered
the job to train at his current track Crayford.
Graded racing is very much the
'bread and butter' for Steve and his team although he will
happily go Open racing with his better dogs.
The quality of greyhounds in
Steve's kennel increased during 2005 and continues to do so,
thanks largely to trusted contacts in Ireland, including Ian
Reilly who supplied top grader and Open race winner Droopys
Jordan. Droopys Jordan (Joannestown Cash x Droopys Sal) will be
used as a brood once her racing career is over.
Steve's best dog
in recent years was Faiths Lad who won Opens at Wimbledon, Hove,
Walthamstow (beating Fire Height Dan) and Sittingbourne over
sprint and standard distances and he reached the Final of the
William Hill Derby Plate in 2005.
Steve consistently has a graded
strength of 50 dogs and has 3 full-time and one part-time staff
at the kennels to ensure every attention is given to the
greyhounds in his care. The training complex includes 5 paddocks and has
all the latest physio and ultra-sound equipment to hand.
